Manna Food Pantries, Pensacon & American Institute of Architects (AIA) Florida Northwest present PensaCAN, a new twist on our former CANstruction event. This sci-fi and pop culture themed design and build event will be held during downtown Pensacola’s Gallery Night celebration on Friday, February 19 at Artel Gallery. Teams are formed by architectural firms or groups led by an AIA member and sculptures are designed and built completely out of cans of food. Sculptures will also be on display during gallery hours on Saturday as part of the Pensacon weekend activities. After the event is over, Manna Food Pantries will distribute the food to the hungry in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties.
“We’re so grateful for our relationships with AIA and Pensacon. Through these partnerships, we are able to engage the community in creative ways to fight hunger in our area,” said DeDe Flounlacker, Manna Executive Director. “Last year, we provided assistance to 20,303 people, including 6,853 children and 5,608 senior citizens. Thanks to PensaCAN and Pensacon, many more of our neighbors in need will be helped with the gift of nutritious food.”
The People’s Choice Awards will once again be an important part of the event. With these awards, the public votes for their favorite sculpture with monetary donations. The team whose sculpture raises the most on Gallery Night wins. All funds raised by the People’s Choice are used to purchase food to fill the shelves of Manna Food Pantries.
In addition to PensaCAN, Pensacon is once again partnering with Manna to fight hunger at the convention. Thanks to our sponsor McGuire’s Irish Pub, 500 Limited Edition Pensacon Lanyards will be available for a $5 donation each. The lanyards will be available while supplies last on Thursday, February 18, 6-9 pm at the Early Pass Pickup at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and on Friday, February 19, 1-8 pm, at the entrance to the Pensacola Bay Center. Donations accepted via cash, check or credit card. Every $5 lanyard purchased will provide a day of food (3 meals) to a neighbor in need.
So far Pensacon events and promotions have raised over $6,000 and nearly 4,000 pounds of food for Manna Food Pantries. “Manna has been Pensacon’s chosen charity from our inception,” said Mike Ensley, Pensacon Chairman. “We are humbled to be even a small part of the great work they do for those in need in our community.”
